Properties within Chicago's 59 landmark districts—from Old Town Triangle to the Jackson Boulevard District—require Commission on Chicago Landmarks approval for any visible exterior alteration. This includes roof deck railings, pergolas, and outdoor structures that may be visible from the street or neighboring properties. The Commission evaluates proposals against the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation, and unapproved work can trigger enforcement actions and mandatory removal.
